CADETS GRAND FINAL – THE SCORE NOT REFLECTING THE GAME
The Cadets took Court 17 against the highly fancied Alexanders and were switched on right from the first hooter. With plenty of purple support on the sidelines (thank you parents and friends) cheering good play, we skipped out to an early 2 goal lead until Alexanders found their range and pegged back to even.
Rachel in Ctr and Sahar in WA were chiming beautifully unsettling the Alexanders mid-court and providing nice turnover ball into Lia (1) and Katherine (6) who was dead-eye in the first. An unfortunate miss looping out of the ring turned possession over resulting in a late goal and Alexanders leading 9 – 7 at the first break……. and we’re right in this.
Out tactics were simple. Alexanders attack is strong so shut it down / their defence is their weakness, play to it. So we did. Anna and Verity were great today in defence and made Alexanders work for every goal, allowing them only 5 goals in the 2nd. Melody in WD worked tirelessly and defended her best all year. Well done Melody.
Anna was pivotal as we drove back down court off turn-overs and had a ripper today. Katherine (2) and Lia (3) worked nicely in the goal circle and were combining like long lost buddies. Half time : Comets 12 – Alexanders 14 èthis was anyone’s game and we sensed Alexanders were off theirs.
Third quarter and both teams traded goal for goal. Sahar captaining the team and along with Rachel, controlled the tempo just to our liking. Five goals to each team (Lia (3) / Katherine (2)) and then the risk of playing without reserves struck. Unfortunately Katherine succumbed to a blinding migraine and we lost our GS with about 5 minutes left in the 3rd. Sahar stepped up to GS but we lost our structure and Alexanders took advantage,
putting 5 very quick unanswered goals at us. ¾ time : Comets 17 – Alexanders 24.
We had to dig deep and do our best. Katherine was gallant just to stay on court in WA and Sahar jumped for joy, punching the air when she landed the 1st of her three goals. Lia stepped up landing 3 goals of her own. We tried to hold the Alexanders but they ran home a number of answered goals skipping out to win Comets 23 – Alexanders 33.
The Alexanders coach was full of praise for our Comets, congratulating them for a great game and conceding we had them a little rattled. Another good season for the cadets, a pleasure to coach and we’re all very proud of their efforts.
A final thanks to Leisha and Gill for controlling our sideline. A thanks to the parents for their support and taxi services and looking forward to seeing you at Presentation Day – 15th September.
