COMET CADETS & D GRADE – FINAL
In what was a do or die final today, our Cadets took on Dundas United and our D Grade Ladies played St Gerards.
Well the pace from the outset was fierce. Fast passes and strong drives were the story of the day and sharp-shooting from anywhere in the circle. The defence was solid as a rock and the teamwork outstanding. Up by one goal at the close of each quarter with a push-away in the 4th for a final score of 41 – 34. CONGRATULATIONS.
Oh and yes, that was the D Grade Ladies – a great win and off to the grand final they go.
Well now for the Cadets playing Dundas United who managed a draw against us in our last match-up. Out tactics were simple, have fun and don’t get caught up in non-netball antics.
The 1st quarter was all about adjusting to the windy conditions and setting into a game tempo we wanted to play. Rachel was captaining the team today and was controlling things nicely from Centre. Sahar in WA was linking beautifully with Rachel with both providing decent ball through to our super-shooters Lia (4) and Katherine (1) to take a 1st quarter lead. Comets 5 – Dundas 2.
2nd quarter and we again settled into our groove with Verity and Anna having strong games in defence, rebounding and turning critical over possession back our way. Nice play ladies. Melody was having a wow of a game today until a big fall drew blood. With no reserves Melody jumped up, brushed it off, scored a few bandaids and back into it she went. Tough play and a super game today Melody.
Crucial goals in the wind were nailed in the 2nd qtr (Katherine 6 / Lia 3) against Dundas’ 5 allowing us to push out to a 14 – 7 half-time score.
Expecting Dundas to up the anti, we maintained our discipline in the 3rd, working our channels and keeping passes as flat as possible in the wind. Some great turnovers from all our players allowed some bonus goals to the Comets (Katherine 4 / Lia 4 ) and our defence in all court thirds was outstanding, securing a number of “held ball” calls our way. Dundas managed 4 goals with Comets 22 – Dundas 11 at ¾ time.
Dundas came out fast in the 4th and to their credit, played a hard but clean-spirited game pushing us to the final bell + 1 min 37 seconds overtime. A little patch saw Dundas land 4 straight goals but we put 2 back quickly to keep our lead safe. Lia 3 / Katherine 2 for the final qtr against Dundas’ 8.
Final Score : Comets 27 – Dundas 19 è all seven played beautifully as a team and off to the Grand Final we go.
Our thanks to our parents and siblings who provided “positive only” barracking under strict instructions and as always, a big thank you to Leisha for keeping the sideline checks in order.
A successful day for the Comets : 2 games / 2 wins
AND 4 teams now in the grand final next week.
