COMET CADETS – WEEK 14
Following a draw in Week 12 and a forfeit last week due to school Duke of Edinburgh commitments, the Cadets took the court today against bottom-placed Santa Sabina. The last week before the finals when possibly a stronger hit-out would have been better however, with Manny away for 3 weeks, it gave Katherine an opportunity to step into GS / GA in match conditions.
From the first whistle the Comets controlled the game, exactly what we agreed. Do our basics well, strong passes, minimal turnovers and work our channels through to the circle. Santa however, scored the first goal and the third and at one stage lead 2 – 1 ; then it crashed for them unfortunately. Lia and Katherine upfront were like long lost goal partners scoring 7 each first quarter. Comets 14 – Santa 2.
Melody captained the team and had a strong game in WD. Rachel and Sahar swapped between Ctr and WA and simply carved Santa up with speed, strong passes and intercepts. Beautiful play ladies. Katherine (9) took the points on Lia (8) in the second quarter for a Comets 31 – 2 half time score.
The Cadets were on a roll with Verity in GK really keen to protect her goal in the little attacking runs Santa managed. Well done Verity – 3 quarters of zero scores against your goal is a great effort. Lia (11) lifted a notch and Katherine (9) kept chiming away. ¾ Time Cadets 51 – Santa 2.
A little ruthless streak crept in where they wanted to take the score off the maximum number on the score sheet (60) for the first time in this teams history. So Lia (9) and Katherine (5) went goal for goal with Katherine notching up a personal tally of 30, amazing effort for a strong defensive player / part-time shooter. Lia with a total of 35 and a personal best record, worked beautifully.
So in a game where 65 goals scored for and 2 against, it was nice to see the MVP was awarded to a GD and rightly so. Anna played superbly and simply dominated today shutting down many of Santa’s forward pushes. Great game Anna – well done.
Final Score : Comets 65 – Santa Sabina 2 è we finished 2nd and into the finals we go.
