UDP 2013
Carlingford Comets has three 12 year old teams this year. Most of these girls will become eligible to do the Umpire Development Program (UDP) next season, if they are interested in umpiring. This involves attending a four hour lecture/demonstration on umpiring, followed by five weeks of assisted umpiring with a mentor. This takes place on Saturdays, in week 3-8 of competition. After that you are able to umpire games on Saturdays (and get paid!)
Before you can enrol in the UDP you must know the rules, by reading the rule book, and passing an online theory exam. The required pass rate is 70%
In past years, whoever has wanted to do the program has been able to without any problems. However, next year because we have so many girls who are interested, I’m not certain that all applicants will be able to do the program, mainly due to needing to find them mentors. I am hopeful, and will do my best to allow all who want to to participate, but in the case that I am not able to, I want to give everyone a fair go, and thus have decided on a process to follow when you apply.
So if you are keen to umpire, and turning 13 or older in 2013, this is what you have to do:
1. Let me know you are interested by sending me an email at umpires@carlingfordcomets.com.au. Do this by September 30th
2. Get yourself a rulebook – buy one from the Canteen at Meadowbank any Saturday that we play netball – cost $14, or you can buy them online – but the postage costs
a bit.
3. Read it! Learn the rules.
4. Do the online test. Here is the link.Umpiring online exam. There is also a link from our website under the links heading.
5. You can do the test as many times as you need to get the 70% pass. Keep trying!!
6. Print a copy of the certificate
7. Send me a copy of the certificate, along with your contact details – home phone, mobile phone, email address. Do this by October 31st.
Once I have all the names, I will try to ensure that all can participate. If I can’t, names of all those who have met the above two date deadlines (letting me know you are interested by 30 September, and copy of exam pass with 70% by 31stOctober) will be placed in a hat, and drawn out to give me a priority order. All others who would like to do the program,
but have not met those dates will be given second priority, and can still do the program so long as there is room. Any who miss out in 2013, will be given priority the following year.
