COMET CADETS – WEEK 8
After the last two weeks with relatively easy wins, the
ladies were up against a stiffer opposition today in the Gladesville Ravens. We
welcomed Rachel back from illness, even if it was for just half a game.
We spoke pre-game about minimising soft turnovers and capitalising
on our opportunities and then went on court and did exactly the opposite.
Offsides, soft passes and breaking on our Centre allowed the Ravens to stay in
the 1st quarter. We went to the break only 7 – 6 to us (Lia 5 /
Manny 2).
The 2nd quarter was better but still too many
soft turnovers. Anna, Katherine and Verity in defence had super games and continued
to show why we have the 2nd best Fore & Against goal record in
our division. All three making great
rebounds and intercepts, returning the ball up-court for Lia (4) and Manny (3)
to score. Half-time Comets 14 – Ravens 10.
We also spoke about the Ravens unsettling and less than
sportsman-like tactics against our shooters and unsettle they did. Unfortunately,
we reacted verbally instead of doing our talking with the ball by scoring goals,
but dropping our standard to their level is not acceptable. We lost the 3rd
quarter, only managing 3 goals (Manny 2 / Lia 1). Again soft turnovers were costly. Melody continues to earn points for effort,
working hard to secure some intercept turnovers. Q3 Comets 17 – Ravens 15.
We knew the Ravens would come out hard in the final quarter
and we had to hold our nerve, trusting our better netball would win the
quarter. The Ravens pegged back to 18 all and then went ahead by 1 or even 2. Sahar
was defending and attacking beautifully from Centre and a very worthy winner of
the MVP. Rachel showed great courage even playing today and linked well with
Sahar, nice work Rachel.
Manny had an off day today however, worked the goal circle
to allow Lia the shooting opportunity. Lia, as captain today, landed 6 straight
whilst our defence shut the Ravens scoring down. The quarter turned when the
umpires awarded the Comets a Ravens centre pass as a special penalty for the Raven’s
on-court bad language.
Final Score : Comets 25
– Raven’s 20.
A tough game but a timely reminder about maintaining our
netball disciplines.
We are TRAINING this Tuesday but no game next Saturday.
